Trim Castle

This is for my knitting and crocheting ladies!

The River Boyne.
Village of Trim.
St. Patrick's Church
Village of Trim.
Sitting on the walls of the old prison.
Note the slits in the wall for the archers.
Clint ran right for the cannon as soon as we got  there.

There are 100 of these to climb up to the top!
The stairs always turned clockwise in order
to ensure that an attacker couldn't use
his weapon as he went up the stairs.  His
drawing hand would hit against the center pole.

Trim Castle
Today in Trim we went to see the oldest Norman castle in Ireland.  It was built around the late 1170's.  The king of England ordered it built as a stronghold against other power hungry Norman chieftains.  The keep is 100 feet high with 4 existing towers.  We were able to tour the keep and enjoy the view from the top.  It was eventually abandoned in the 1700's because it was too cold for comfort.  The residents moved to a smaller tower in the wall.  Trim is known as the area with the most medieval ruins in Ireland.  There are also lovely fish and chips in the area!
